All factors in play
Magnum IP season 5 is coming to NBC – you don’t have to worry about it! Instead, you just sit back and wonder when it will be aired.
Deciding on a premiere date for any show can be complicated; that’s even more the case when you’re talking about one that airs mid-season. There is no specific time frame here. While a fall premiere for network television usually means late September or early October, midseason runs from January through March at least. This means that a number of dates are available for the Jay Hernandez series, and there are a series of factors at play that could better determine things.

First of all, note that the state of production will not really be an issue. Since filming is likely to begin in September, that means there will be enough episodes ready in January or anytime after. It shouldn’t play a big role in when Magnum IP come back.
What will be? It starts with performing on some NBC fall shows. Wednesday and Thursday queues are locked, but there are new shows on Mondays and Fridays. How could these tariffs be key in determining whether Magnum IP must become a replacement show if one of them does not do well. Even if they do, it could still fill a gap in the timeline. Say quantum leap is a hit on Monday. Magnum IP could air from January to March, then quantum leap could return to close out the rest of his season.
Another variable? It’s just a matter of finding the place that works best. Fridays basically make a lot of sense because the show has already aired successfully there, but will there be room? NBC will take this into account and also consider the best introduction possible. They don’t want to just throw the show to the wolves. They will give the series a place where they can promote it. They can also lean on the fact that the series already has a Season 6 renewal. That might give them comfort to take a bigger risk, like airing Season 5 on Sundays after the NFL season in March. This is a time slot they’ve always struggled in and they could see Magnum IP as a fix.
Chances are we won’t hear of a premiere date until later this year. This should give them more time to consider all of these variables and make a decision.
