Should Arsenal stop looking for defensive recruits? (Opinion)
It’s never a shock when Arsenal rumors emerge by tying us to potential signings, but with our current options, I think a defender is the last thing we need.
I am aware that the club landed players like Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis in the previous window, while also sending William Saliba on loan, but we still have a large number of options available for selection.
Pablo Mari, Gabriel Magalhaes, David Luiz and Rob Holding currently share the two starting roles, while Calum Chambers remains an option after recovering from a long stint on the sidelines.
In addition to the five vying for the roles at the moment, we also have William Saliba, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Mark McGuinness all on loan as well, the former duo playing regularly in the highest circles of French and German football at the actual hour.
Mavropanos has already impressed fans during his first-team deputy in 2019, before falling back down the pecking order when others returned to fitness.
The Gunners will have to be careful not to factor in both Saliba and KM heading into the new season, with many clubs likely to guarantee them regular playing time if they leave and join them, and we certainly risk losing out. lose them. definitely if they don’t have a chance.
McGuinness does appear to be determined to wait for his chance, however, and while he deserves a good chance in the preseason to try and show his first-team value, he would likely appreciate being tested with another loan in the Championship or Premier League following his League One exploits with Ipswich this season.
The ties with players like Ibrahima Konate and Odilon Kossonou are all very good, but there are great things expected from our young players who haven’t had their chance yet, and while we have to trust the process, it is certainly obvious that our weaknesses are in other areas, right?
