Viant invests $ 10 million in medical device facility in Costa Rica
Viant Medical Inc. completed the $ 10 million expansion of its medical device manufacturing facility in Heredia, Costa Rica, in April, in part representing continued growth in its liquid silicone rubber molding capabilities. .
The Irvine, Calif.-Based company also plans to hire up to 300 employees in the first year after opening the plant in Costa Rica, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
The company has invested in additional capacity to meet market demand for minimally invasive surgical devices, including energy-based devices. The expansion includes 15 new molding machines and adds two-stage molding capability, following further investments related to liquid silicone rubber in 2020.
Viant has a long history with LSR casting through its elastomeric center of excellence in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The company extended its LSR molding offering in 2020 to its factory in Costa Rica, given the capabilities of this site with complex device assembly work supported by on-site plastic injection molding and extrusion.
“The addition of LSR molding further improves vertical integration within the site, which has many benefits for the customer, including reduced time to market, reduced risk and improved costs,” said Beth Meyer, senior director of strategic marketing for Viant.

With medical devices becoming increasingly complex from a manufacturing perspective, the investment in the Costa Rica plant will allow Viant to increase speed and efficiency in meeting customer deadlines, while meeting customer demands. need for more unique and personalized molding jobs required to manufacture a growing list of Medical Equipment products.
The company has long considered the Costa Rican location to be well suited for complex assemblies, especially those with a high injection molding content, including two injection molding and LSR molding. This location can also support the metal content of its network of 22 manufacturing sites, Meyer said.

These processes also allow Viant to discover new growth opportunities in orthopedics and drug delivery, Meyer added.
Expansion adds 14,000 square feet of ISO Class 8 cleanroom molding and assembly space and reallocates 16,000 square feet of additional warehouse, office and support capacity, for a total of 180,000 feet squares in four buildings. There are nearly 40 injection molding machines and 24 assembly lines.
With the strong growth of the Costa Rica plant, Meyer said the company is adding a range of team members, including operators, technicians, line managers, production supervisors, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, quality inspectors, material handlers, operations managers and engineering managers. . Of the 300 new employees who will be hired, around 65 are expected to be engineers.
Competitively located in a free trade zone, the expansion of the Costa Rica site will support increased specialization in the molding, extrusion and complex assembly of thermoplastics and elastomers for interventional, surgical devices and components. and others.
